HOUGHTON MIFFLIN
We use the Houghton Mifflin reading series in Early Kindergarten. We work on segmenting and blending, rhyming, beginning sounds, ending sounds, onset and rime and other phonological awareness skills. We use a lot of songs, nursery rhymes and poems to learn about and play with words. We also focus on meeting an Alphafriend each week. We spend the week discussing each capital and lower case letter. We discuss the sound each letter makes and brainstorm words that begin with each sound. We also read books and do activities that focus on each letter. It is amazing how the kids grow each year and begin to enjoy playing with words, letters and sounds. During the second semester we do a lot of kid writing activities. It is always exciting to watch each child learn, grow and gain confidence in this area.
